HOUSTON, TEXAS, APRIL 18, 2014 – Sara Nevins tied the school record for career victories as the Bulls won their second game of the day, 4-2, over Houston at the Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Nevins tied Monica Triner's record of 92 wins after pitching four scoreless innings in relief, allowing only two hits while striking out three. It was also the second win of the day for the senior lefty from Pinellas Park, Fla., as USF improved to 6-4 in American Athletic Conference play and 32-13 overall.
"If you're tying or breaking anything that Monica Triner ever did you must be pretty good because that was one of the best players that ever played the game at the University of South Florida," head coach Ken Eriksen said.
Houston struck first thanks to a solo home run to straight away center field by Kayla Holland in the second inning.
Haley Outon made it 2-0 Cougars with an RBI single in the third but was thrown out at second to end the inning.
For the second straight game USF used a big fourth inning to take control of the game. The Bulls posted four runs on four hits and one Cougar error to take a two-run lead.
Ashli Goff (Tampa) led off the frame with a bunt single and came around to score on a throwing error when third baseman Jordan Rains sailed her throw to first into left field. Lee Ann Spivey (Palm Coast, Fla.) followed that with an RBI single to left field that scored Kourtney Salvarola (Arnold, Md.) and tied the game at two.
The Bulls took the lead one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Karla Claudio (Puerto Rico) and kept the inning rolling with back-to-back singles by Monica Santos (Tampa) and D'Anna Devine (Morrisville, Pa.). With the bases loaded, Nicollette Levine was hit by a pitch to cap off the scoring in the frame and give USF a 4-2 lead.
It was a complete team effort for USF as no player recorded more than one hit and three different players had RBIs.
USF will look to complete the sweep tomorrow as first pitch for the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. EST.
