Wyckoff Hits Walk-Off as Bulls Go 2-0 at UA Invite

CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 5, 2016)- The USF softball team went 2-0 on the second day of the Under Armour Invitational to improve to 3-1 in the tournament and 10-9 on the season.

The Bulls used a walk-off win in game two to take a 5-4 victory over Illinois, after picking up a 4-1 victory over College of Charleston in the first game of the day.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow for the final game of the Under Armour Invitational. USF will face Central Michigan, Sunday at 4 p.m., at the USF Softball Stadium.

Game Two: USF 5, Illinois 4

Kristen Wyckoff hit a two-out RBI single for the walk-off win as USF downed Illinois 5-4.

Mia Fung hit a clutch two-out double and advanced to third on a fielding error to put a runner in scoring position for Mo Santos. Santos drew a walk, bringing up Wyckoff. On a 1-1 count, Wyckoff singled up the middle to bring home Fung and give the Bulls the walk-off win.

USF got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first, plating 2 runs. Juli Weber and Astin Donovan led off with back-to-back singles and moved around the base paths on a pair of wild pitches to make it 2-0 after one. Erica Nunn singled and Mia Fung walked to put two on with two outs later in the inning, but were left stranded.

The Bulls plated a third run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Fung. Back-to-back singles from Lee Ann Spivey and Nunn put two on for Fung, who singled over the head of the Illinois first baseman to drive in Spivey.

Illinois took the lead in the fifth, using a four-run inning to make it a 4-3 game. The inning started with a pair of walks, before Ruby Rivera doubled to cut the USF lead to 3-2. A two-out RBI single from Carly Thomas tied the game, before Alyssa Gunther recorded an RBI single to give Illinois the lead.  

USF tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Kristen Wyckoff RBI single. Nunn doubled to start the inning and was replaced on the base paths by Kassie Moeller. Moeller advanced to third on a groundout and came home on the single by Wyckoff to tie the game at 4-all.

Fung was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Pinch-hitter Wyckoff was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Nunn improved to 5-5 on the season, throwing her second complete game of the year. The senior gave up four runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking just two. She also helped her cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day.

Game One: USF 4, College of Charleston 1

College of Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out RBI double by Taylor DuPree. Katie Padilla started off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came home on the DuPree double.

USF responded and tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Mo Santos. The Bulls took advantage of a pair of Cougar errors and a passed ball to move Lee Ann Spivey and Mia Fung into scoring position. Sam Worrell was issued a four-pitch walk to load the bases, bringing up Santos. Santos would drop a sac fly into center field, allowing Spivey to score and tie the game.

The Bulls took the lead in the fourth on Santos' second RBI of the day. Similar to the second inning, Spivey and Fung moved into scoring position on a walk and a double, respectively. Worrell was issued her second four-pitch walk of the day to load the bases. Santos grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to plate Spivey and give the Bulls the 2-1 lead.

In the sixth, USF extended its lead thanks to a Lindsey Devitt RBI single. Spivey led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Fung. Fung advanced to second on the same play, thanks to some heads-up base running. With no outs, Devitt singled through the left side to plate Spivey. Juli Weber singled with two outs to plate Fung and push the lead to 4-1 at the end of the inning.

Fung led the way for USF with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate, including her fourth double of the season. Spivey was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Susan Wysocki picked up her first win of the season, throwing two scoreless innings. Erica Nunn picked up her first save of the year in 1.1 innings of work.
