TAMPA, Fla. ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team turned in a record setting performance tonight en route to its fifth straight win in a 126-62 victory over Grambling State at the Sun Dome.
The win improves USF to 9-1 on the year which marks just the fifth time in school history that it has won nine games in its first 10 outings.
Janae Stokes led four players in double figures with 39 points, including 25 points in the second half. Jazmine Sepulveda scored 17 points, and Shantia Grace and Alexis Givands each added 14 points in the win. Porche Grant grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
It was very fitting that Stokes had the type of performance that she had tonight with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers greats Jimmie Giles and Doug Williams - a Super Bowl Most Valuable Player - sitting in the stands. Stokes had her own MVP performance as her 39 points marked the third most scored in Division I this season (Grace holds the Division I season high with 44 scored against Coppin State on Nov. 23). In addition, Stokes shot 13-18 from the field, including 11-14 from behind the three-point arc on the night. Her 11 treys are the most made in a Division I game this season.
The Bulls, who came into the game averaging 87.9 points per game which was second in the nation behind BIG EAST foe Connecticut (92.4), made no doubt early that they were in control scoring six points in the in the first minute of the game and forcing the Lady Tigers to use one of their five timeouts.
Grambling (2-6) would cut the lead to five points (8-3), but USF would blow the game open running out to a 60-33 lead at the intermission.
After shooting 53.7 percent (22-41) it didn't look like the Bulls could shoot any better in the second half. USF, however, would hit 64.9 percent (24-37) of their shots in the second half and finished the contest shooting 59 percent (46-78) from the floor.
The Bulls would hit the century mark ? for the third time this season, which is the first time in school history that they accomplished the feat ? when Grant hit the first of two free throws with 9:36 left in the game to give USF a 100-52 lead. Ironically, prior to Grant's free throw attempts, Ashley Sanders, who hit two free throws with the Bulls sitting on 99 points in each of their previous two games this season hitting 100 points (100 against Central Connecticut and 103 against Stetson) had her third opportunity but missed both from the charity stripe.
In the end, the Bulls' 126 points turned out to be the most scored in a Division I game this season, while also setting a new school mark surpassing their previous best of 124 originally set against Morris Brown on Nov. 30, 2002.
In addition to USF's accomplishments tonight on the hardwood, head coach Jose Fernandez mow moves to within three games of becoming the school's all-time leader in career wins for a basketball coach in school history. His current record is 125-124 and needs just three victories to surpass former men's coach Bobby Paschal as the Bulls' all-time winningest coach. Paschal ended his career with 127 wins in 10 seasons (286 games)
Rachele Dobbins and Secrette Anderson each scored 14 points for Grambling in the loss.
The Bulls will get back to work on Saturday, Dec. 20 against Northern Arizona at Noon in the Sun Dome. For ticket information call 1-800-GoBulls.
