Thomas Takes Weight Throw at Elite Event

TAMPA - Jared Thomas' win in the weight throw highlighted the start of the USF track and field team's spring season opener.
Thomas, a redshirt senior, beat out competitors from Southern Miss, Florida, LSU, Auburn and Alabama with a winning throw of 62' 9 ½" Saturday at the Crimson Tide Indoor Opener.
"Jared is a big-time competitor and he always steps up when it counts," head coach Warren Bye said. "He stepped up today and had a great meet. He's off to a good start and we look for great things to happen to him over the next several weeks."
The Bulls as a whole posted 29 finishes in the top 10 of respective events at the CrossPlex Indoor Track in Birmingham, Ala. A total of 18 USF women and 15 men qualified for Big East Indoors on their first tries.
"They did a really good job of preparing and getting ready to compete," Bye said.
Senior Arieonna Bailey showed she's ready for a high level of competition by finishing sixth in the 60 meters and seventh in the 200. Bailey's 200 time of 24.45 seconds ranks fourth all-time in USF's indoor history books.
Atasha Warren started her redshirt senior season off with a weight throw mark of 57' 1" that ranks her fifth all-time at USF. Warren also placed third in the shot put.
Triple jumpers Marqueshia Stallworth and Monique Williams finished second and third respectively with marks of more than 40 feet. Bye also was impressed with Drew Volz and Winston Perry, who both posted marks of more than 16 feet in the pole vault.
USF's indoor season continues next weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational.
