Bulls Claim Three Titles at BIG EAST Meet
February 17, 2013 | Track & Field
The Bulls swept the long jump titles with Monique Williams winning her second-straight indoor crown in the event posting a leap of 19-7. Neaman Wise captured the title on the men's side with a personal-best mark of 24-7.25. Wise also won the league crown during the 2012 outdoor championship last spring.
USF dominated the long jump field with the women claiming three of the top four spots with Williams in first, Samantha Specht in third (19-0.75) and Miriam Skipper in fourth (18-10.5). Joining Wise on the men's long jump podium was Kevin Bell who finished third with a mark of 24-0.25 while Brian Kilts finished fifth (23-4).
In the men's pole vault, USF went 1-2 with Drew Volz claiming the title after a personal-best clearance of 16-8.75 and Wyatt Metzger also posting a PR of 16-4.75 for second. Volz snapped Notre Dame's five year streak of winning the event (2008-12).
"We knew coming in that we had to be strong in the field events and we stepped up in a big way today on both sides," USF head coach Warren Bye said. "Going 1-3-4 in the women's long jump, 1-3-5 in the men's and 1-2 in the men's pole vault along with a third-place finish in the weight throw gave us a very solid start. We got a big boost with our track performances as well today setting 12 personal-bests and advancing a dozen to the finals."
Two other Bulls picked up All-BIG EAST honors in senior Jared Thomas who finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 63-2 and Rachel Klinger who posted a career-best 3,802 points in the pentathlon for third. Klinger PR'd in three of the five events to post her highest finish ever that is also just 89 points shy of the USF school record.
A dozen USF student-athletes will compete in the finals on Sunday. Alfred Higgs will run in both the 60m and 200m finals and will be joined by Wise in the 60m. Pascal Orelus posted the sixth-fastest 400m time to move on to the next round while Landon Hargrove also finished sixth in the 60m hurdles prelims to earn a spot in Sunday's final.
"We told our kids coming in that they were ready to go, it's time to step up because they can compete with anyone and they did just that today. This is the time of the year that they should be peaking and they all bought in and really came to compete. We just have to go out there and finish it strong tomorrow, which we know we're capable of."
On the women's side, Dariel Jackson will compete in both the 200m and 60m finals after finishing second and seventh respectively during the prelims. Williams, fresh off of her long jump title will also run in the 60m final while Aieronna Bailey finished second in the 200m with a school record of 24.06 to earn a spot in Sunday's final. The Bulls advanced two in the 400m in Rachael James (school-record 55.01) and Christine Poole-Trice (56.05) while Yasmin Smith picked up a spot in the 800m final after posting a school record of 2:08.61.
The second and final day of the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship gets underway Sunday, Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. Bulls fans can watch the action live streamed on www.bigeast.org.
