Anderson Sets HJ School Record at USF Open
March 09, 2013 | Track & Field
TAMPA - The University of South Florida posted 32 combined BIG EAST qualifiers and had 19 event winners at the USF Open on Friday. Senior high jumper Courtney Anderson led the way for the Bulls, setting a school record in the high jump with a six-foot clearance in winning the event.
"I really like these meets because it gives the kids a chance to get out on the track and transition from indoor to outdoor," said USF head coach Warren Bye. "I'm really happy for Courtney in breaking the school record, and she had a couple of good attempts at the next bar. We had some really good performances tonight. We obviously have some things we need to work on, but we got some things done today so it served its purpose."
Anderson was impressive in her high jump series, producing first-attempt clearances on each of her first three bars. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to get over in three attempts at 1.88m (6-2). Anderson became the first female in USF history to clear 1.83 (6-0), bettering the previous record of 1.78m (5-10) set by Loutisha Hall in 2008. Anderson missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Indoor meet by just a quarter inch and her six-foot clearance would have finished 10th at today's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Dariel Jackson posted two qualifiers in winning the 100 meters in 11.61, tying her career best, and finishing second in the 200 meters in 24.07. Aireonna Bailey took the 200 meters in 23.86, which ranks fourth all-time in USF history. Narricka Williams had a strong day in posting qualifiers in both hurdle events. She won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.13 and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.48. Laticia Sims took the short hurdles in 14.39.
In other the field events, USF picked up event wins and qualifiers from Natasha Stewart in the long jump with a mark of 5.77m (18-11.25) and Atasha Warren in the discus with a mark of 43.71m (143-5).
The men produced 12 BIG EAST qualifiers and nine event wins on the evening. Chase Meyers cleared 2.15m (7-0.50) to win the high jump, producing a qualifier. That mark moves Meyers into fifth all-time on USF's list. Drew Volz became only the third Bull to ever clear 17-feet in the pole vault in finishing second with a mark of 5.20m (17-0.75). He was one of three Bulls to earn qualifiers in the event with Wyatt Metzger clearing 4.85m (15-11) and Winston Perry posting a mark of 4.70m (15-5).
Matthew Oneal moved into third on USF's all-time list with a mark of 15.33m (50-3.50) to win the triple jump. Justin Osking also moved into third on the shot put list with a throw of 15.99m (52-5.50) to win the shot put.
On the track, Franklin Mosely won the 400 meters in a BIG EAST qualifying 48.69, while Roshard Williams qualified in the 100 meters with a 10.82 followed closely by Derrick Hopkins, who also qualified, in 10.85.
Next up, USF host the Bulls Invitational on March 14-15. The hammer throw and 5,000 meters will take place on Thursday, while the majority of events will take place on Friday, starting at 9:30 a.m. Events on the track get underway at 2:30 p.m.
