USF News Wire: A Landmark Victory

GoUSFBulls.com Daily News WireFebruary 7

? Greg Auman recaps USF's unbelievable upset of No. 8 Marquette - the first win against a top ten team in program history. He writes, "Facing No. 8 Marquette, the last remaining team undefeated in Big East play, the Bulls got that shot then got that stop, picking up a historic upset Friday night in the Sun Dome."

? The Associated Press also published a write up of the Bulls victory over the only unbeaten team in the BIG EAST. The article reads, "South Florida could finally relax. No. 8 Marquette's last two shots at victory rolled off the rim, leaving the Bulls to celebrate their first win over an opponent ranked in the top 10."

?The Tampa Tribune's Brett McMurphy also reviews the Bulls landmark victory. He writes, "When the horn finally sounded, Heath pumped his fists and Verdejo raised both arms. USF's Chris Howard grabbed the basketball and flung it toward the heavens. It landed about six rows deep in the jubilant USF student section among the Sun Dome crowd of 5,316."

"Verdejo, who was shooting only 27 percent in Big East play, led the Bulls with 21 points. The senior carried the Bulls down the stretch, scoring 15 of USF's 25 second-half points. In USF's postgame locker-room celebration, he broke down crying."

? Greg Auman previews tonights match up with No. 8 Marquette at the Sun Dome. He writes,"USF faces its school-record third Top 10 team this season with a fourth likely at Connecticut on Feb. 21. It lost 75-62 at No. 1 Pitt on Jan. 14 and 80-54 at No. 7 Louisville on Jan. 28."

? Travis Bell of 10Connects.com put together a great feature, which includes an article and a video, on Bulls guard Dominique Jones and his relationship with his father. Here are the first couple paragraphs and a link to the video; "Norman Jones always wanted his son to be a quarterback, but Dominique didn't like constant hits from bigger opponents. He preferred basketball and is now a sophomore at USF.

Good decision by the younger Jones.

Dominique leads the Bulls with 18 points per game and adds five rebounds and four assists. He has assumed a leadership role as a sophomore and the guidance he learned from his dad helps son fill the role.

"We're real good friends. That's my best friend. I love him to death," Dominique says about his dad. "I still feel like the father-son respect is there, but I think the way we talk and the way he understands what I'm talking about and the way I understand what he's talking about, it's like a friendship there too."'

? Brett McMuprhy takes a look at tonight's game with the Golden Eagles. He writes,"With the University of South Florida beginning the second half of its Big East schedule tonight against No. 8-ranked Marquette, Coach Stan Heath decided his team needed a break.

So Monday and Tuesday, the Bulls didn't practice. They shot some free throws and lifted weights, but no practice.

"I wanted them to grab a couple of days - normally I don't do this - grab a couple of days to get away," Heath said. "So we can have some fresher legs, be stronger mentally and maybe put some things behind us and come back a more determined basketball team that can find a way to win."

? Auman writes in his blog that the Bulls will probably bring in a smaller class in 2010. He writes," With a huge incoming class that should push USF very close if not all the way to its limit of 85 scholarships and a small senior class in 2009, the Bulls should have a much smaller recruiting class next year."

?The Sporting News describes Jim Leavitt as "glowing" when refering to his 2009 signing class. It reads "Usually tight-lipped about players and their potential, the Bulls coach gushed Wednesday about a class of 28 recruits that's widely considered the best in USF's relatively young football history.

And while it's not uncommon -- even for Leavitt -- to routinely give glowing reviews of talent accumulated on signing day, this time there were genuine signs of progress."

? McMurphy also writes, "Leavitt's press conference on National Signing Day has concluded and if you had over 6 1/2 on the number of times he used the word "powerful," cash your tickets, you're a winner.Leavitt went through the entire 28-player class, mentioning an item about each player."

? Adam Beasely of the the Miami Herald features new Bull Steven Jacques.

He writes,"South Broward offensive lineman Steven Jacques originally agreed to attend Auburn, but rescinded his commitment after the school fired longtime coach Tommy Tuberville in December.

On Wednesday morning, the 6-4, 285-pound lineman signed with the University of South Florida.

''The coaching staff there is stable; it's a growing program,'' Jacques said. ``When Auburn fired Tuberville, it was shocking.'''
