TAMPA - Drew Volz posted a pole vault win and two Bulls broke school records Saturday at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup.
Volz beat competitors from Connecticut, Virginia and meet host Penn State with a mark of 16' 6 ¾" that head coach Warren Bye said he can top moving forward.
"He's been very consistent and he's ready to make a breakthrough at the Big East Indoor Championships," Bye said. "We're hoping to see him go over 17 feet and beyond."
Senior Jared Thomas set a new USF indoor record with a weight throw of 64' 11 ½" and sophomore Justin Osking moved up to the program's top spot in the shot put.
The Bulls as a whole posted eight finishes in the top three and had nine new Big East indoor qualifiers. USF also had 10 finishes that rank in the top 10 of events in the school's record books.
"Overall it was a very, very good day for us," Bye said. "The kids stepped up their game and competed very well against very, very good competition. It set us up well for the Big East Indoor Championships in two weeks."
A highlight on the women's side was Rachael Klinger, who placed second in the pentathlon with a total of 3,655 points that rank second in USF women's indoor history. Klinger's performance included second-place finishes in the long jump and 800, and a third-place time in the 60-meter hurdles.
Atasha Warren set a new personal record in the weight throw for the fourth straight meet. The graduate student from Wabasso, Fla., took fourth place with a mark of 48' 5 ¼" in Saturday's event.
"She just keeps improving. She's ready to bust out of that 50-foot mark," Bye said.
The Big East Indoor Championships take place Feb. 16-17 in Geneva, Ohio.
