? In his blog, Greg Auman previews the softball's first round match up with Syracuse in the BIG EAST Tournament. He writes,"USF softball coach Ken Eriksen has an interesting decision to make in the single-elimination Big East tournament, which starts Thursday morning in Louisville. Needing a strong showing for any chance at making an NCAA regional, should he throw his best pitcher, senior Cristi Ecks, in an opening-round game Thursday against fourth-seeded Syracuse, or save her for what would likely be a Friday showdown with top-seeded DePaul?

Eriksen said Tuesday that he can't look past his first opponent, so he'll give the ball to Ecks, the Big East ERA champ this season, for Thursday's opener against Syracuse.

"There is no DePaul right now. It's a one-day championship. One game, one day," Eriksen said. "There's no holding back, no thinking about the next day."'

? Rising senior Jessie Hester checks in at No. 21 in Brian Bennett's BIG EAST player ranking on ESPN.com. Here's what Bennett has to say about Hester,"It's hard for anyone to stand out among South Florida's seemingly endless stable of receivers. But Hester led the Bulls with 54 catches for 574 yards last season, finishing fifth in the Big East in both categories. The son of a former Florida State star and pro player, Hester gives USF steady hands and serious quickness in the slot position, making him a favorite target for Matt Grothe. The question is whether the 6-foot, 174-pound senior has the size to make it at the next level. But he's awfully productive in college.

?  Bart Doan of Realfootball365.com issues a 2009 BCS prediction that pits USF against Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. He writes, "Especially in this case, where a USF program still new to major college football will win the Big East for the first time. Amid expectations, the Bulls flopped last season, plain and simple. 2009 brings a much more entertaining schedule that sees the likes of Florida State and Miami on the out-of-conference slate. More importantly, though, other Big East favorites like Cincinnati and West Virginia come to Tampa. Oh, and Matt Grothe is back again."

?  Greg Auman reviews that and other 2009 Bowl predictions in his blog. He writes, "There's only so much to be written about college football in May, so there's a lot of fun conjecture about what we'll be writing about in December and January. That includes bowl projections, which are largely guesswork at this point but still good for conversation in the offseason. Where will USF be bowling after the 2009 season? The guesses are all over the place."

?  Auman also writes about significant gains USF has made in terms of its Academic Progress Rate over the past year.

? In his blog Auman reports that former Bulls Jarriet Buie, Marc Dile and Amari Jackson have all signed free-agent contracts after Sunday's workout. He writes," Five former USF players spent the weekend at One Buc Place trying to land free-agent contracts with the Bucs, and it looks like a very productive three days for the Bulls in attendance.

Defensive end Jarriett Buie said that he signed a free-agent contract after Sunday's workout, and said the same is true for tackle Marc Dile and receiver Amarri Jackson. Jackson had earned the same contract last spring but was cut in June as the Bucs prepared for preseason camp. Making the summer 80-man roster is still a far cry from making the regular-season 53-man roster, but the Bulls have taken the first step, and will report back for the first OTA (organized team activity) session.

It appears that tight end Cedric Hill and center Jake Griffin did not get contract offers from the Bucs."

? Former Bull Tyrone Mckenzie caught a tough break as Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriot's Third round draft pick appeared to injure his right knee. She writes," Rookie linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, a third-round pick, injured his right knee and was unable to finish yesterday's morning practice.

The injury occurred while the players were being put through one-on-one pass-coverage drills. McKenzie was attempting to cover a running back, and it appeared the two got their legs tangled as McKenzie attempted to knock the pass away"

? Auman also reports on Bulls signees Sterling Griffin, Derrick Hopkins and Kayvon Webster, who dominated the sprints at the State High School track meet. He writes," Just how fast are the three Miami Monsignor Pace football players coming to USF this fall? They dominated the sprints at Saturday's Class 2A state track finals in Winter Park, leading Pace to a state championship. Derrick Hopkins and Kayvon Webster finished first and second in the 100 meters on Saturday night, with Hopkins running in 10.64 seconds and Webster close behind at 10.82.

Then Webster, Hopkins and Sterling Griffin were part of the Pace entry in the 4x100 relay, which not only repeated as state champions, but won with a state-record time of 40.54 seconds."

? ESPN.com's BIG EAST Blogger Brian Bennett's "The Big East's best Series": Ranks Senior safety  Nate Allen, No. 26. He writes,"Allen did not have an outstanding 2008 season. He had only one interception and was part of a Bulls secondary that struggled to stop the big play several times in key games. But remember this list is also based on potential, both this season and at the next level, and Allen remains an intriguing pro prospect.

The 6-foot-2, 206-pound senior has the prototypical skill set for a safety and simply needs to raise his intensity level to reach his potential. Allen's sophomore season showed what he was capable of achieving, as he had four interceptions and three fumble recoveries and scored two touchdowns. "
