? Former USF catcher Trey Manz is featured by Stephanie Pedersen of his hometown newspapaer, The Ledger-Enquirer. Pedersen writes," Trey Manz's bags are packed and ready to go where ever the Cincinnati Reds want to send him.

In fact, they've been packed since Monday.

Manz didn't pack this past weekend to prepare for the upcoming Major League Baseball draft but was glad he didn't unpack when the Reds picked him 779th overall in the 26th round Wednesday."

Greg Auman reports that former Bulls quarterback Grant Gregory is officially now a Kansas State Wildcats. He writes,"Grant Gregory, USF's top backup quarterback for the past two seasons, has officially started classes at Kansas State and will compete for the Wildcats' starting quarterback job this fall after being granted a waiver to allow him immediate eligibility this fall.

"He has an opportunity here," coach Bill Snyder said by phone Wednesday. "He's a very, very good quarterback, one who just played behind a truly exceptional quarterback down there the last three years."

Gregory's career numbers at USF -- 27-of-50 for 384 yards and four touchdowns -- read more like a strong Saturday in the pass-happy Big 12, but he has the experience of five college football seasons, which is much more than the two redshirt freshmen he'll be competing with. His ability to run well in additional to his passing skills makes him ideally suited for Kansas State's offense."

? Auman also features the five USF draftees taken in the MLB draft so far. He writes," USF's draft picks are moving quickly -- signee Chase Greene, the speedy prospect from West Boca, had already gotten an offer Wednesday night after being drafted in the 16th round by the Mets. Greene had hoped to go between the third and sixth rounds, but said the Mets have offered him "fifth-round money." He said last week it would take a signing bonus of at least $150,000 to keep him from going to USF -- he'd be draft-eligible after his sophomore year.

? Dave Nicholson of the Tampa Tribune highlights coach Jim Leavitt's breakfast at the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce. He writes,"University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt said today that the most rewarding part of his job is helping shape the lives of his players.

"It's a lot bigger than football," Leavitt told members of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce.

Leavitt said his successes on the field including bowl appearances have been gratifying, but he finds it most rewarding when players return years later to tell him of the roles he played in their personal development

Greg Auman writes that Jose Fernandez's Bulls will not let history repeat itself as USF  has upped the level of competition for the 2009-10 season. Auman writes,"When asked why USF's women's basketball team didn't make the NCAA Tournament cut this spring despite a 22 wins and a .500 record in the Big East, the chair of the selection committee cited the Bulls' nonconference strength of schedule, which she said ranked 264th in the nation.

With that in mind, USF coach Jose Fernandez has made an effort to improve the level of competition his team will face in the first two months of the season. And in doing so, he hasn't improved the toughest teams his Bulls will face in November and December, but rather has improved the weakest teams on USF's schedule."

? Auman also reports,"NCAA men's basketball tournament could be coming back to Tampa soon.

Local organizers officially submitted bids last week to the NCAA, hoping Tampa can be an opening-weekend or regional host site for the tournament in 2011, 2012 or 2013.

Delivering Tampa's bid were Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, USF athletic director Doug Woolard, Bill Wickett, executive vice president of communications for the Lightning and Times Forum, and Norwood Smith, vice president of sales for Tampa Bay and Company.

? Bretty McMurphy reports," University of South Florida senior defensive end George Selvie will receive a special presentation from the Tampa Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity in conjunction with The Crescent Foundation.

Spokesman Philip Harris said Selvie would receive a special presentation at the fourth annual Scholarship and Community Awards Banquet Saturday at noon at the Marshall Center ballroom on USF's campus.

Others honored include this year's Charles H. Odom and Dr. Sam Horton Scholarship recipients: James Jackson, a Tampa Bay Tech senior and Michael Holmes, a Clearwater senior; and Gamma Eta Sigma Chapter Book Stipend recipients: Kuvawn Phelps, a Tampa Bay Tech senior, and Donzell Jenkins, a Tampa Bay Tech senior.

Indianapolis Colts tight ends coach Ricky Thomas is the keynote speaker. Erica Riggins, of Bay News 9, is the honorary chairman and mistress of ceremony.

The Crescent Foundation targets males, ages 13-18, and endeavors to provide activities and programs intended to assist them in their efforts to excel in contemporary society, focusing on their home, cultural, athletic, social and educational needs."

? Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune features former Bulls defensive end Jarriett Buie as Buie fights  for a roster spot in Bucs' Camp. Richardson writes,"Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie defensive end Jarriett Buie is not used to football uncertainty. When Buie was a football standout at Armwood High, his starting position was a lock. As Buie emerged into a prominent University of South Florida defensive player, his skills and contributions were recognized by coaches and fans.

Now, however, Buie is fighting to make Tampa Bay's roster as an undrafted rookie, a battle that will resume on Tuesday when the Bucs begin their last week of voluntary workouts. Tampa Bay's mandatory minicamp will be held June 16-18

"I'm behind in a way, so I just try to take everybody's advice," Buie said. "I am trying to be seen, not heard, and observe everything around me. I listen to the trainers, equipment guys and I observe everything and try to pick everything apart. I'm trying to work hard and learn all the new techniques my coaches are teaching."

? Greg Auman ponders some possible replacements on Stan Heath's coaching staff. He writes,"Fans clamoring for news on who Stan Heath will choose for two openings on his coaching staff shouldn't have to wait long, as announcements could be coming on the replacements for Dan Hipsher and Byron Samuels as soon as the end of this week.

We've previously reported that one strong candidate is Bowling Green assistant Lamonta Stone, a Detroit native like Heath and a strong recruiter in any talent-rich area that Heath knows well. Heath has said his priority is on finding recruiters who can help him improve the talent level at USF, and Stone fits that billing and has known Heath for about 25 years."
