Brett McMurphy and Greg Auman report on the recently announced plans by USF for the "Athletics District" initiative, which will include improvements and facilities for basketball, baseball, softball, football and recreation, as well as additional projects including soccer and tennis facilities.

• Auman extends his coverage of the initiative by asking when the projects could be completed and what type of cost the projects would entail. He writes, "It's reasonable, from a distance, to think construction on baseball and softball could start after the 2010 seasons, in May or June of next year, and with a quick turnaround, the Bulls could potentially be in their new homes by 2011."

• McMurphy continues his BIG EAST preseason countdown, this time detailing his No. 6 pick, UConn. You can also catch his No. 7 and 8 picks with the link.

• Now that the voting is done for USF's all-time offensive players, McMurphy tells us it's time to vote for the all-time best players at each defensive position as well as at punter.

• The USF Kickoff Tailgate Party at Capogna's Dugout Sunday drew a large crowd and saw coach Jim Leavitt speak in the rain, reports Lee Diekemper of the Tampa Tribune. According to the story, Leavitt told the crowd kicker Maikon Bonani may not play during the 2009 season, but the white helmets worn last year will be back in 2009.

• Greg Auman also was at the event, and posts several thoughts on the season and the position battles based on what he heard from Leavitt. He writes, "Leavitt was asked about the white helmets. Will they return? "Yes," Leavitt said. "I don't know when." The most popular speculation from fans seems to be the Friday night home game against West Virginia, with the Miami game a close second."

• You can also catch this link from Bull Hoop Talk, which was also at the event. "The connection with the event and the alumni association is a great partnership. I was once inspired to join and have continuously called on others that I know who graduated from USF that are not members to join forces. The benefits are outstanding and the networking and friend-building process is a wonderful way to increase awareness and build a portfolio of USF bred business associates and contacts of your own."

• Brett McMurphy gives us the rundown on how the voting went for the top players for USF at each offensive position, with Matt Grothe edging out Marquel Blackwell by just 11 votes for USF's all-time quarterback. McMurphy writes, "Grothe and Blackwell seemed to swap the lead every other day during the week long voting. The votes were actually deadlocked at 6 p.m. Sunday until Grothe narrowly pulled away during the final six hours of the voting Sunday night."

• Auman offers up a link to a story on SouthernPigskin.com, in which the author ranks USF at No. 13 in its preseason poll. He writes, "Senior quarterback Matt Grothe is posed to lead the Bulls to their first Big East championship. The gutty senior has weapons all around him on offense and a defense led by arguably the nation's best edge rusher in George Selvie."

• McMurphy begins to detail his picks for the BIG EAST media poll, starting with his No. 8, Syracuse, followed by his pick to finish seventh in the league, Louisville.

• Kickoff times for both Wofford and Charleston Southern will be at 7 p.m., write both Auman and McMurphy.
